I start the day with a short trip from Fuzhou to Xiamen. When I travel, I like to break up long train journeys by stopping in intermediate cities. It’s a habit that has given me the chance to visit places I might never have seen otherwise.
I think I’ve taken more trains in China than I have in Sweden—and I’ve lived there for ten years. Chinese train stations are so standardized and well-signposted that navigating them has become second nature.
Taking the train offers views of the countryside and smaller towns, windows into everyday life that I’d likely miss otherwise.
As soon as I get to Xiamen, I travel to the smaller Gulangyu island. I take a ferry that after a short trip leaves me in Gulangyu.
This is a very touristic island. But there are very few tourists from outside Asia.
I walk the main shopping string in Xiamen. Food, clothes, electronics, toys, and much more can be found here. I buy some clothes.
